Liverpool eliminate Villarreal and advance to Champions League final
- Liverpool overturned a clean two against Spanish hosts Villarreal to a valuable 3-2 win in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg.
- Villarreal led by two clean goals in the first half through Senegalese Polaye Dia and French Frances Kolin in the 3rd and 41st minutes, respectively.
- In the second half Liverpool rose up and turned the table upside down by scoring three consecutive goals that carried the signings of Brazil's Fabinho.
- Colombian Luis Diaz and Senegalese Sadio Mane in the 62nd, 67th and 74th minutes.
Villarreal finished with 10 players after their French player Etienne Capoue was sent off after receiving the second alarm in the 85th minute of the meeting.
Liverpool progressed to the final of the continental championship after winning the combined first and second leg by 5-2, following last week's two-goal win in England without pay.
Liverpool will compete to lift the Champions League trophy on May 28 with the victor of the second Spanish-English clash in the golden box between Real Madrid and Manchester City, which is scheduled to be hosted on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the royal stronghold.
Sadio Mane dismantles his partnership with Drogba with a special number in the Champions League
English Liverpool star Sadio Mane of Senegal impressed in his side's clash with Spanish side Villarreal on Tuesday in the semi-final second leg of the Champions League football tournament.
Mane scored the winning goal for his team (3-2) in the 74th minute of the meeting.
According to the World Soccer Statistics Network, Mane became Africa's most scoring player in the knockout rounds of the Champions League competition with 15 goals, edging out Chelsea legend Didier Drogba of Côte d'Ivoire (14).
Mane also equalled the record for the number of goals scored by one player for an English team in the Champions League knockout rounds, registered by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.
The selection of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp from Germany was the "Reds" starting line-up to face the Spanish hosts: "Alison, Trent, Konate, Van Dyke, Robertson, Thiago, Fabinho, Keita, Mane, Jota and Salah."
