A new mystery in North Korea. Who is the mystery woman appearing alongside Kim?
The Guardian has spoken of a mysterious woman who has been spotted on several occasions in recent months alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The mystery of the woman, seen alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last week during a massive outdoor concert, was also seen on another occasion carrying volumes in the context of a speech to the Supreme People's Assembly, where Kim pledged not to give up nuclear weapons.
It is remarkable that North Korean state media have been posting images or videos showing the mysterious woman sometimes next to Kim and sometimes behind him for months, but she has never been known about her.
The United States-based North Korea News website
which specializes in publishing critical reports and direct monitoring information on North Korea, first spotted the mystery last February and has been following it ever since.
According to the website, she was frequently observed carrying a purse, potentially containing items that the North Korean leader requires at all times, such as his phone, cigarettes, or medicine,"
- She was estimated to be 30 or 40 years old
- and was said to be possibly a relative of Kim's
- as the North Korean leader is believed to have at least two non-sister sisters
- Kim Sol Sung and Kim Chun Sung, both born in 1970.
The older half-sister, Kim Sol Sung, may have "remained engaged in the party leadership behind the scenes," according to the website. Regarding Kim Chun Song, not much is known.
The Guardian commented on the news
noting that Kim's family, founded in 1948 by Kim Il Sung, had ruled an iron fist for three generations and women had rarely been appointed to senior positions.
However, Kim Jong Un allowed a small number of women to take up window positions, formal and informal.

It is rumoured to be the mastermind behind Kim's carefully painted public image both locally and externally.

He also appeared with pop star Hyun Song Wall, aged 44, and is rumoured to have been Kim's ex-girlfriend, her band seeking poems for the leader in uniform.
In 2018, Kim Jong Un was given the title of "esteemed First Lady", his wife Ri Sol Jo, which analysts saw as a major boost to her political standing.
