Merrick Garland appoints special adviser to
look into confidential documents in Biden's possession
A special adviser was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to consider how President Biden would handle confidential paperwork from the Obama administration.
Robert Hoare
a former US lawyer
was selected by Garland to lead the investigation.
After the discovery of a second cache of classified documents inside
the garage of Biden Wilmington
Delaware, on Thursday
the Justice Department filed the case with a special counsel investigation from a direct review. Ben Biden Research Center offices in Washington are where preliminary documents were discovered.
Earlier today :
I signed an order to appoint Robert Hoare as Special Counsel for the matter I just described," Garland said Thursday after identifying the documents found.
He is permitted under the agreement to look into if somebody
or entity violated the law in respect of this matter.
the Special Adviser shall not be subject to daily supervision by any official of the Service, but shall comply with the regulations, procedures and policies of the Section ".
According to Garland
- Hoare worked in the Criminal Division of the Ministry of Justice
- where he handled corporate fraud, counter-terrorism
- and appeals cases. Until he left the Justice Department in 2021
- Hoare served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland.
Garland added:
"I am confident that Mr. Hoare will discharge his responsibility in a fair and expeditious manner and in accordance with the highest traditions of this department."
This week
after preliminary records were released
the White House Counsel's office examined two Biden homes in Wilmington
Delaware :
and Rehoboth Beach
Delaware.
When they found the documents in Wilmington's garage, according to the White House legal team, they immediately alerted the Justice Department.
No information was provided regarding the contents of the documents or whether Biden or anyone else read them after he stepped down as vice president.
Lawyers among personal and political papers discovered a small number of additional Obama and Biden administration records with classified marks.
These manuscripts, all except one, were discovered in
the storage space of President Wilmington's garage
"White House lawyers wrote in a statement Thursday. A single one-page document was discovered between materials stored in an adjacent room.
According to the White House
no documents were found at Biden Rehoboth Beach's home. In addition
the materials will be delivered to the Justice Department by the Biden administration.
Wilmington's records
- are the second cache of confidential documents
- from the Obama administration to be found.
- The first group was discovered at
the headquarters of the Ben Biden Center in Washington
a think tank supporting Biden.
On Thursday :
White House correspondent Peter Ducey over the second set of documents.

The discovery is similar to last year's discovery
the moment Donald Trump, a previous president, was made public
