Trump is considering increasing Tomahawk missile shipments to
Ukraine if negotiations with Russia falter
Mundo newspaper reported that US President Donald Trump is currently considering supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles in limited quantities as a tool to pressure Russia to force it to enter into negotiations.
The newspaper added, citing sources close to the White House, that these supplies may increase if the pressure strategy to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to sit at the negotiating table with Vladimir Zelensky fails.
Moscow has repeatedly stressed that pressure on Russia on the Ukrainian settlement issue is futile, and that it has a clear position on the ceasefire.
Trump had previously stated that he was close to making a decision on supplying Ukraine with missiles, but he would first like to know Kiev's intention to use them.
For his part
- Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Kiev's use of
- Tomahawk missiles would harm relations between Russia
- and the United States, stressing that the use of
these missiles in Ukraine would be impossible
without the direct participation of American forces.
Russia believes that
supplying Ukraine with weapons hinders the settlement process, directly implicates NATO countries in the conflict, and is considered "playing with fire".
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also indicated that any shipments containing weapons to Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia.
American magazine:
The West's talk about the "Tomahawk"
is an indirect admission of Russia's victory
Reports in The National Interest magazine indicated that Western countries have begun talking about supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles, in light of Russia's advance on the battlefield.
The magazine wrote:
- "This clear escalation, even just at the level of talk
- reflects a fact that Washington, London and Brussels
- are avoiding announcing: the Russians are winning".
The writer stressed that
the leaders of
Western countries should work to achieve a peace agreement
and not try to fight "until the last Ukrainian soldier," noting that "their number is much less than what people in Brussels or Washington think, and their ability to curb the Russian advance is about to run out."
On the other hand
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he had made an actual decision regarding supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, but he wanted to understand how Kiev intends to use them.
According to the Telegraph
- Zelensky requested these missiles during his meeting
- with Trump in mid-September. While the Axios website reported that
- this item was the only one on Kiev's list of requests that Trump rejected
while he expressed his support for the other items.
For his part
in a session of the Valdai International Discussion Club, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces' use of Tomahawk missiles is impossible without the participation of American military personnel
which would mean Washington's
direct involvement in the conflict. He stressed that Russia is ready to respond to any aggressive actions in all circumstances, as its air defense systems have adapted to Atacms missiles, and will adapt to this type of weapon as well.
