Musk:
Surgical robots will replace doctors within five years
American businessman and founder of the neurolink neurotechnology company
Elon Musk :
- believes that surgical robots
- will replace human surgeons within
- the next five years.
Musk commented on :
a post by writer Mario Nauval in the X Network
about the progress of robots in the field of surgery
saying:
"Robots will outperform good human surgeons in a few years, and they will outperform the best human surgeons in about five years.".
Musk also revealed that :
Neuralink used a surgical robot to implant electrodes into human brain tissue
explaining that humans would not have enough speed and accuracy for this task.
Last January :
- Musk announced the success of the first implantation of
- the Neuralink device in a human brain, and that
- the patient is in good condition.Musk indicated that
preliminary data on the device’s operation shows promising results.
Later :
Musk revealed that :
the new device is called "Telepathy," and allows its owner to control a smartphone
or computer with the power of thought, and was designed mainly for people who
have lost the ability to use their limbs.
How does Elon Musk's brain chip work?
Elon Musk's Neuralink company performed the first human chip transplant on
a human, despite a controversial history of animal testing.
After receiving approval for human trials, the company has now implanted the first
Neuralink chip, called "Telepathy", inside a person's brain.
Musk claims that Telepathy allows you to control a phone or computer, and thus
control almost any other device, "just by thinking.".
The billionaire businessman hopes it will allow users with disabilities to
"communicate faster.".
What's Neuralink?
- Neuralink was registered in California as a "medical research"
- company in July 2016, and Musk mostly funded the company himself.
- She is famous for her work on creating a network of electrodes connected to
the brain, which may allow us to communicate wirelessly with the world.
The company claims that :
this will enable us to share our thoughts, fears, hopes and anxieties without
insulting ourselves in written or spoken language. It can also help people with
paralysis walk again and treat other neurological diseases.
The company achieved
a major breakthrough by implanting Telepathy in a human.
The company has generated considerable controversy, particularly for its
experiments on live animals including monkeys and pigs.
Neuralink previously admitted that monkeys died during tests, but denied
allegations of animal abuse, although the allegations suggest otherwise.
The Neuralink system consists of a computer chip connected to small flexible
threads that are sewn into the brain by a robot similar to a sewing machine.
The robot removes a small portion of
- the skull, attaches thread-like electrodes to specific areas of the brain
- then sutures the hole, and the only visible remnant is
- a scar left behind by the incision.
Musk said that this procedure takes only 30 minutes, will not require general
anesthesia, and patients will be able to go home on the same day.
The brain consists of nerve cells that :
transmit signals to other cells in the body, such as muscles and nerves.
Electrodes in the Neuralink chip are able to read these signals, which are then
translated into controls for external technologies, such as computers or
smartphones, or bodily functions, such as muscle movement.
The question remains: Will all these promises apply to the first patient to receive
the transplant?, although Musk said he is "recovering well.".
