Despite the controversy over carbohydrates..
Multiple health benefits of eating bread daily
Bread is a staple food around :
the world and is an indispensable part of the table in many diets.
With the increasing trend towards reducing carbohydrates
disagreements
have emerged about the health of eating bread daily, especially
with its many types such as white, brown, and sourdough bread.
Bread contains important nutrients such as fiber, proteins, natural sugars
B vitamins (thiamine, niacin, folic acid), and minerals such as iron and zinc.
However :
- its high carbohydrate content
- may cause a feeling of
- hunger shortly after eating it.
Therefore :
nutritionist Christy Roth recommends choosing whole grain bread
which gives
a feeling of fullness for a longer period thanks to its high fiber content
as one slice contains about 7% of :
the recommended daily amount of fiber.
She added that
combining bread with protein sources
such as sprouted grain bread (whole grains that have been soaked in water
for a short period until the germination or budding process begins, such as wheat
barley :
and quinoa), increases the effectiveness of satiety.
Multi-grain bread also stands out as a healthy option, as it contains more fiber
(5 to 7 grams per slice) than whole wheat bread (only about 2 grams).
Fiber contributes to reducing the risk of :
- heart disease
- stroke
- type 2 diabetes
- and bowel cancer.
Ilana Natker
of the Grain Foods Foundation, pointed to the importance of grains as a major
source of dietary fiber, stressing that excluding them from
the diet may lead to a significant fiber deficiency.
Natker also explained
- the importance of folic acid
- a vitamin essential for pregnancy
- as women who follow low-carb diets
reduce their chances of getting enough :
- which increases the risk of having children with neural tube defects
- (a group of congenital malformations that affect the brain and spinal cord
- and occur as a result of the neural tube not closing properly during the first weeks
of pregnancy (usually between the third and fourth weeks after fertilization).
For those who exercise
the British National Health Service (NHS) recommends eating bread as part of
a balanced diet, unless there is an allergy or intolerance to wheat.
The Authority considers whole grain and brown bread to be excellent energy
sources, noting that white bread contains vitamins and minerals but has less fiber
so it is preferable to look for types rich in fiber.
As part of heart attack prevention
the NHS ::
encourages a Mediterranean diet that includes eating more whole-grain
bread, rice, pasta, fruits, vegetables and fish, while reducing meat.
The Authority confirms that diets rich in fiber contribute to lowering
blood pressure and enhancing general health.
However
nutrition experts warn that foods rich in fiber, including bread, may cause
symptoms such as bloating and gas, so it is recommended to try white bread
or sourdough bread to :
reduce these symptoms when gradually moving to a high-fiber diet.
The recommendations also warn that bread raises blood sugar levels quickly
which may pose a challenge for diabetics who need to adjust insulin doses.
Ruth concludes by emphasizing the importance of not labeling foods as "good"
or "bad,"
encouraging people to read food labels before purchasing them to choose what is
best for them, noting that bread can be part of a healthy diet when eaten with
healthy sources of fat or light proteins.
